The automobile's destiny is electric. While the combustion engine still has a lot of life left, it's clear that its days are numbered as the car's primary source of propulsion. And this fact fits perfectly with Volvo's plans for the future. The Swedish car manufacturer has a few lofty goals to achieve in the next four years, notably to offer a 50% electric and 50% hybrid lineup by 2025. And with its growing lineup of Recharge pure electric and Recharge plug-in hybrid models, the automaker is well on its way.

However, while electrification offers benefits like quieter, more responsive performance and improved energy efficiency, Volvo has an even bigger reason for pursuing the technology: preserving the planet for future generations. And that's why the company hopes to achieve a fully climate-neutral manufacturing network by 2025 as well. Last month, Volvo took a large stride toward its ambitious aim when it announced that its Torslanda plant in Sweden is now fully climate-neutral. It's Volvo's first car manufacturing site to earn this achievement and second overall. The company's Skövde engine plant in Sweden also achieved climate-neutral status in 2018.

Just Getting Started

Volvo defines a fully climate-neutral plant as one that "registers no net increase in the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere as a result of the electricity and heating used by the plant." The Torslanda site achieved climate-neutral electricity in 2008 and now has climate-neutral heating as well, with heat coming from 50% bio-gas and 50% industrial waste. However, Volvo hasn't finished upgrading Torslanda yet, as it has additional efficiency-improving plans that are estimated to save around 20,000 MWh per year by 2023.

“Establishing Torslanda as our first climate neutral car plant is a significant milestone,” said Javier Varela, head of industrial operations and quality at Volvo Cars. “We are committed to having a climate neutral manufacturing network by 2025 and this achievement is a sign of our determination as we consistently work to reduce our impact on the environment.”
