While alternative-energy-powered luxury vehicles have become more prevalent in recent years, Volvo has been ahead of the curve for some time. And with the future of automobility beginning to clarify, Volvo remains at the forefront of innovation and exploration as it endeavors to do its part to help deliver a more sustainable world. What started in 2013 with the Volvo V60 PHEV wagon has since expanded to the entire Volvo fleet. And as the automaker works towards its 2025 goal of a 50-percent electric fleet, Volvo Recharge is the first major step in that direction.
Volvo Recharge Plug-in Hybrid Models
Recharge is the designation given to each Volvo hybrid model. At present, Volvo is the only manufacturer with a hybrid or electric version for each of its production nameplates. For S60 and S90 sedans and XC60 and XC90 crossovers, the Recharge powertrain consists of a twin-charged (turbo and super) 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and battery pack. Altogether, the powertrain produces an immense 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque, sending the energy to the all-wheel-drive system through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
A more powerful version, dubbed Polestar Engineered, is available across the lineup, including the V60 and V90 wagons. In addition to greater output (415 horsepower, 490 pound-feet of torque), Polestar Engineered variants add additional performance equipment like Ohlins suspension dampers, Brembo brakes, and performance tires.
Volvo XC40 Recharge All-Electric
The XC40 is the only Volvo model without a hybrid powertrain, but that's because Volvo selected the platform for its first-ever fully electric model. The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 features a 78 kWh battery powering two electric motors, which output a combined 402 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. Not only can the XC40 Recharge accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, but it also boasts an emissions-free range of more than 200 miles. And with a 150 kW DC fast charger, it can refill the battery from ten to 80 percent in about 40 minutes.
